Pathways Named Exemplary Advising Program
Thursday, November 08, 2007 - LSUE Public Relations

EUNICE – Louisiana State University at Eunice’s Pathways to Success program has been named by the National Academic Advising Association as an Exemplary Advising Program for Under Prepared Students in the Community College.

“NACAPA is the premier national society for the study of the role of academic advising in successful student learning and development,” said LSUE Chancellor William Nunez. “To be recognized by NACAPA as exemplary confirms the outstanding support and counsel which the LSUE Pathways faculty and staff provide our students toward their academic success.”

Pathways to Success was initiated by a campus wide committee that looked at ways to help students who enroll at LSUE and are lacking skills needed to succeed in college.

The program includes several courses to bring their academic skills up to the college level combined with extensive advising, mandatory tutoring and strictly enforced policies on class attendance.

After being in existence for more than three years, the program has already far exceeded its goals for retaining students. The percentage of students in good standing (GPA of 2.0 or greater) has increased 76 percent and the percentage of students placed on probation has dropped from 40 percent to seven percent over the three year period.

The fall-to-fall retention rates have also increased, jumping from 30 percent to 49 percent for first-time freshman in the program.

The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students.
