EUNICE – Louisiana State University at Eunice’s Developmental Education program, Pathways to Success, has been selected as an Outstanding Institutional Advising Program Award Winner by the National Academic Advising Association as part of the 2008 Annual Awards Program for Academic Advising.
The Outstanding Advising Program Awards annually recognize programs that document innovative and/or exemplary practices resulting in improvement of academic advising service. This award will be presented during the annual NACADA Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois in October.
The Pathways to Success program at LSUE is one of three institutions across the nation honored with the award. Pathways garnered particular recognition at the national level for its success with first-year student.
The Pathways to Success program is a first year bridge program that focuses on overall student achievement by improving academic skills through developmental coursework and academic advising. The program also mandates attendance in class and tutoring for those having academic difficulty and has been adapted by several other institutions across Louisiana and the nation.
Remarkably, the program won the Academic Advising Award through its intense academic advising and the impressive gains made by students in just four years on the LSU at Eunice campus.
Success in developmental mathematics and English composition increased better than 15 percentage points at LSUE. In addition, student retention and persistence to graduation, has also increased better than 15 percentage points.
LSUE has implemented the program on the main campus in Eunice and on its branch campuses in the Cenla area at both LSU at Alexandria and the Learning Center for Rapides Parish (LCRP).
“I expect the program to have a similar impact at both LSU at Alexandra and the LCRP,” said Paul Fowler, the director of development education at LSUE. “Students who cannot be admitted to a four year institution now have the opportunity to gain that extra help they need in order to be successful at either a two year or four year institution.”
