Eunice—Frequently charitable organizations find themselves in a bind. To serve the community, they need grant money. To get grant money, they need to hire a grant consultant. How do you pay a consultant when you have not yet received the grant money? LSUE’s web-based course, Writing Grants and Research Proposals, offers a solution.
Students in the grant writing course meet for orientation on Saturday, August 23 for one hour. The course is web-based with only four, three-hour class meetings on Saturdays throughout the Fall 2008 semester: from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon on August 30, September 20, October 18, and November 8.
A winning grant requires in-depth research, careful preparation and writing, and an excellent match with funding organizations’ funding priorities. This course teaches needed skills…and points out the pitfalls that frequently cause worthwhile organizations to miss out on their share of the funding pie.
LSUE’s grant writing course covers grant research and writing skills. Each student will develop a grant based on funding needs of their charitable group or for a selected local non-profit organization. Throughout the course of the semester, students will develop the sections of a grant, receive peer and instructor review and feedback, revise and perfect their work. Information and tips to prepare a grant budget will be covered. By the end of the semester, students will have newly-developed grant writing skills and a grant ready for submission to a funding agency.
“We see this course as a way to serve our local communities,” stated David Pulling, Director of Continuing Education and Evening and Weekend Courses. “Further,” he added, “the math is right—tuition of under $300 is better than paying consultant’s fees—and you walk away with the skills to continue creating winning proposals in the future!”
