LSUE Student Wins AARP Scholarship
Wednesday, November 26, 2008 - LSUE Public Relations

EUNICE – Deirdre Jackson has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season. Jackson just learned she was the recipient of a $5,000 AARP scholarship for women.

Jackson, 45, is currently a pre-nursing major and is also pursuing an associate degree in management at LSU Eunice. She started LSUE in the spring of 2006 and is a fulltime student. Jackson’s daughter also attends LSUE.

She applied for the AARP scholarship by writing an essay about her educational goals and significant obstacles she’s faced and how she overcame the obstacles. The award was open to women over 40 who could show financial need and were attending an accredited institution.

At the beginning of October, Jackson received word she was a semifinalist for the scholarship and on Halloween Day, she was named as a finalist.

In mid November, Jackson and LSUE received word that she was the recipient of $5,000 from the AARP Foundation Women’ Scholarship Program.

Jackson’s award will assist her in covering tuition cost for the spring and summer semesters at LSUE, easing her financial burden and allowing her to borrow less funds to pay for college.

As part of the award, Jackson will also receive a mentor through the Council for Opportunity in Education who will assist her in her school work for one year.

Jackson is from Eunice, but she is currently living in Opelousas.
