EUNICE – Malcolm F. Vidrine, PhD, a professor of Biology at LSU at Eunice, has recently published his 100th refereed scientific paper.
The latest paper, entitled Unionicola (Walcottatax) Weni N. Sp. And U. (Walcottatax) Arcuatoides Vidrine (ACARI: Unioniclidae) from freshwater mussels in China, was coauthored by two undergraduate students who conducted research as part of LSUE’s Undergraduate Research Summer Institute and the publication was funded by research publication funds of the Division of Sciences and Mathematics through the LSUE Foundation. The paper appeared in the International Journal of Acarology this month.
“The Division of Sciences and Mathematics is very fortunate and honored to have such a dedicated researcher as a member of our faculty,” said Dr. Renee Robichaux, head of the division of science and mathematics. “He is a consummate supporter of research in the department, assisting junior faculty in establishing their research programs and fostering critical thinking in all.”
Vidrine’s first paper was published in 1974, and the most recent was published December 1, 2008. His 100 papers have appeared in 34 different journals with a combined total of 78 different coauthors.
The papers included the descriptions of 61 new species of mites and 39 new subgenera of mites from Louisiana and throughout the world. Also a single new species of rotifers was described from rice fields in Louisiana. Papers also dealt with mosquitoes, armadillos, leprosy, freshwater mussels, agriculture, dragonflies, butterflies, Cajun Prairie, and many other topics.
Vidrine has also authored nine books and contributed to ten popular articles. He is currently working on two books on the Cajun Prairie.
He received his PhD in Biology from the University of Louisiana Lafayette in 1980 and holds a Bachelor’s of Science and a Master’s in Zoology from LSU.
